One of the planned theme areas located at Discovery Place KIDS–Huntersville is an outdoor learning garden. The garden is designed to provide direct experiences with nature for children and their caregivers.

The plans call for the following exploration areas:

- Soil, Sand and Building: An activity area where children will have the opportunity to dig in the dirt, play in the sand and build structures using natural materials.
- Sound: Children can experiment with sound using natural instruments
- Movement and Balance: From the observation tower to log climbing steps children will have the opportunity to get moving.
- Nature Art: A tree stump table will provide the surface for creating works of art using natural materials
- Animal Habitats: Children will explore animal homes in a butterfly garden complete with Calvin the Caterpillar climbing structure and a small waterfall/pond area.
