The I CAN Move exhibit area of Discovery Place KIDS-Huntersville is designed to provide children with the opportunity to experiment with movement on the land in the air and on the water. Authentic experiences in several modes of transportation: flight, trains, boats, cars and NASCAR will provide role playing experiences. Special experiment areas will provide opportunities to explore forces and motion through water and air power.
Plans include the following exhibits:
Water Play - a real boat and lake murals will set the stage for experimentation with water. Try your hand at boat races, water wheels, pumps, and a lock and dam.
Airport - climb the control tower climbing structure to reach the airport gate for check-in, baggage cart, security screening and a handicapped... Keep reading.
Prior to the Museum opening, our volunteers have been instrumental in assisting us with cleaning and sorting toys as well as setting up activities at public fairs and festivals. Current members of our Crew have volunteer interests spanning a variety of backgrounds. These dedicated volunteers range from retired grandparents who want to stay busy and give back to the community to students who want to gain experience for the future.
Our very first volunteer at Discovery Place KIDS was Chris, a young lady with cerebral palsy. She joined the CAN Do Crew to act as a role model for visitors with disorders as well as help children learn how to interact with people of all abilities. Chris and her mom Tracy have helped with everything from crafts to sorting toys. They are an important... Keep reading.
A piece of local history became an official part of Discovery Place KIDS-Huntersville on August 5 when a 1952 Allis Chalmers B tractor was installed at the Museum. The tractor, donated by the Ed Davis family, will become a permanent part of the I CAN Be Healthy exhibit area, which encourages healthy lifestyles.
The tractor has a long history in the local community. Originally purchased brand new by C.L. Hucks in 1952, it was with his family until Hucks sold it to Ed Davis in 1974. The tractor has been a part of Davis farm and family ever since. Davis family, who was on-hand for the installation of the tractor along with the Hucks family, chose to donate it to Discovery Place KIDSHuntersville so that it can be enjoyed by the entire... Excitement continues to build as volunteers at Discovery Place KIDS Huntersville continue to work behind-the-scenes to prepare the Museum to open this fall. Newell Rubbermaid has provided many of those hard-working volunteers, sending several groups of 12 or more to help put together products donated by the company.
On July 19, we found the Newell Rubbermaid volunteer crew hard at work once again at Discovery Place KIDS, this time in The Learning Garden outside the building where they were busy installing the garden and playspace areas. In addition to installing the Newell Rubbermaid-donated storage shed and benches, the team busied themselves putting in edging for the garden path, building an arbor over a tree stump table, building a container garden for plants... Perhaps the most vivid memories we hold are those from our childhoods. Pause for a moment and remember your favorite play memory. I bet you are starting to smile! Im imagining pretending Im deep in the jungle in an overgrown sink hole next to my parents home. Discovery Place KIDS will enable our children to imagine themselves as community heroes or deep-sea explorers creating memories that will last for a lifetime.
Before the Museum even opens, you and your favorite little person can work together to create your very first Discovery Place KIDS memory. Discovery Place KIDS is partnering with Our Paintin Place (www.ourpaintinplace.com) at Northlake Commons to offer the opportunity for your child to leave their mark on this exciting community project. For a... Keep reading.
